I have found Martin's name along with some other Eisenbraun's on the Ellis Island list. I never knew many of my father's relatives. They weren't a very close bunch. But I remember Grandma Eisenbraun. She was an awesome lady.

Message: Dear Mr. Eisenbraun,
Mary Weinland, knowing that I was born into a large family and raised in South Dakota, generously gifted me with a copy of your wonderful and very enjoyable book. It brought back many memories of my youth and those years of living on the plains in South Dakota.
Born in 1939 and being the sixth of 12 children in our family was no easy life. As you pointed out in your book, children were expected to work as hard as everyone else. However, the rewards, were developing an exceptional work ethic and a healthy body and mind as well as having large and loving family. All of my sisters and brothers are living and are in reasonably good health. We are still quite close and communicate frequently though we do not get to see one another as much as we would like.
Attending a one room country school which required a two mile walk to and from school daily was quite an experience for my sisters, brothers and me as much as it was for you. Our good fortune was found in having some of the best teachers of my educational experience. It provided all of us with such a good educational foundation that all 12 of us have some level of education beyond high school. Most of us worked our way through college and have an Undergraduate degree while a few of us continued on for a Master degree or a Doctorate. We were good students because we wanted to learn and we were given a very good basis. I remember that by the time I started the sixth grade, I had read all of the books in the County Public Library including the encyclopedias and dictionaries, so books were ordered for me from the State Library for the next three years.
The tremendous snow storms were awesome and beautiful. My memories of sledding down the roof because the snow covered and banked against the house on the north side as well as climbing out windows on the south because the door on the south was also banked shut by drifts, remain with me yet. More than once we tied long ropes to the front door and to ourselves and walked out into blinding blizzards to reach the barns and out buildings to tend livestock and chickens, rescue the newborn calves and bring them in to dry near the kitchen stove so they might survive the 40 below zero temperatures. One such Christmas we were blessed with the most radiant exhibit of the Aurora Borealis at 11:00 pm as we prepared to leave for midnight Christmas services.
Our great blessing was having a well that piped cold water into the house so that we had fresh water which we heated on the stove and carried back out to water the chickens. The cattle had water running continuously at the stock tank near the barn. We had to break away the tremendous chunks of ice that formed around the spigot from splashing water, and break the surface ice so the cattle could drink. That well was the famous artesian subterranean source that came to the surface from natural pressure so we never needed waterpumps. We heated our house with coal, which we had to buy, as the areas we lived in, first Letcher and then Forestburg, had few sources of wood and most trees were stunted and dwarfed by the long cold winters and dry arid summers.
Sorry to digress so much but your book brought back so many memories that the reminiscences just keep flowing to mind. Needless to say, it was a great memory trip. I know that my family members will be delighted to read it and it may just give me the needed impetus to begin my own memoirs.
It has been a real pleasure meeting you through such a pleasant medium.
Sincerely,
Liz Scherschel
